Hazy Hill Farm: Maine Craft Cannabis at Our Bangor Counter

Hazy Hill Farm is a Maine owned and Maine operated craft cannabis cultivator, and one of the growers whose flower we are consistently glad to see come through the door. If you have been handed something at our counter and asked who grew it, there is a reasonable chance this was the answer.

This page covers who they are, what small batch craft cultivation actually means once you strip the marketing out of it, and what to look for in their flower. It is not a stock list. Craft growers produce in limited runs and what is on our shelf changes constantly, which is rather the point of them.

Who They Are

Hazy Hill Farm is a Maine based cultivator with roots in the state’s medical cannabis community, operating well before adult use sales began. They are a member of the Maine Craft Cannabis Association, which is the trade body for the state’s smaller independent growers rather than the large multi-state operators.

That distinction matters more in Maine than it does in most legal markets. Maine’s industry grew out of a long-established caregiver and medical system rather than being built from scratch by outside capital, and a lot of the best flower in the state still comes from growers who were doing it years before it was a retail category. Hazy Hill sits in that group.

What Small Batch Actually Means

Craft and small batch get used loosely enough to be meaningless, so here is what they refer to in practice.

Smaller flower rooms. Growing in smaller rooms rather than one large warehouse space means conditions can be tuned per room and per cultivar. Different plants want different things, and a single environment set for everything is a compromise for most of what is in it.

Hand trimming. Machine trimming is faster and cheaper, and it knocks trichomes off the flower in the process. Hand trimmed flower keeps more of its resin and generally looks better, because a person is deciding what to remove rather than a drum.

Proper curing. Jar curing after the initial dry is where a lot of the flavour actually develops. It takes weeks and it ties up space and labour, which is exactly why volume producers often cut it short. Flower that has been rushed through the cure smells like plant matter rather than like a cultivar.

None of this shows up in a THC percentage, which is part of why we spend so much time telling customers that the number on the label is a poor guide to whether they will enjoy something. Our guide on judging cannabis quality covers what to look at instead.

What They Grow

Hazy Hill is associated with a rotating set of cultivars rather than a fixed catalogue, which is typical for a craft grower. Names that come up regularly in connection with them include Do Si Dos, Chem D and MAC, alongside their own selections.

If those are unfamiliar, the useful thing to understand is the family each sits in rather than the specific name. Do Si Dos is in the heavier dessert lineage that runs through Girl Scout Cookies and Wedding Cake. Chem D sits in the pungent Chem family that also produced Sour Diesel. Tell a budtender which of those directions appeals and they can point you at whatever is currently in from any grower, not just this one.

What to Look For

With any craft grower, the things worth checking are the same, and they are all things you can assess at the counter.

  • Smell first. A properly cured batch should be loud in the jar and specific, not just generically green. If you cannot tell what it is supposed to smell like, the terpenes have gone.
  • Trim quality. Hand trimmed flower looks deliberate. Sugar leaf is tucked rather than shaved, and the bud structure is intact rather than rounded off.
  • Moisture. It should give slightly and break cleanly. Crumbling to dust means it was over-dried or has been sitting; spongy means it was packaged too wet.
  • The full lab panel, not just THC. The terpene figures tell you more about what you will experience. Our page on reading a certificate of analysis explains the whole document.

Why We Stock Maine Growers

Everything on our shelves is grown in Maine, and that is a legal requirement rather than a marketing position: cannabis cannot cross state lines, so every legal cannabis product in Maine was grown and processed here.

What is a choice is which Maine growers we buy from. We lean toward smaller cultivators because, in our experience behind the counter, that is where the flower people come back for tends to come from. It is not a universal rule and there are large operations producing good material, but the correlation is strong enough that we buy accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you always have Hazy Hill Farm in stock?

No, and no dispensary honestly can with a craft grower. They produce in limited runs, so availability moves. Check the live menu on our products page or call ahead rather than making the trip on the assumption.

Is craft cannabis actually better?

Often, in the ways that affect flavour and smoothness, because smaller runs allow more attention at the stages that matter. It is not automatically more potent, and potency is not the same as quality. Plenty of customers prefer a well grown twenty percent cultivar to a rushed twenty eight.

Where is Hazy Hill Farm based?

They are a Maine operation. Craft cultivators generally keep their growing locations low profile, so the useful question at a counter is which of their batches is in rather than where it was grown.

Can I ask you to order something in?

Tell us what you are after and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can get and roughly when. Supply from small growers is not always predictable, and we would rather say so than take an order we cannot fill.
